Regular eye exams are an invaluable tool in maintaining healthy eyes by detecting and preventing disease in both adults and children. Some diseases develop slowly without causing pain or vision loss. Early detection of any problems can reduce the risk of further harm and allow for a choice of treatment options. Part of your exam includes the following procedures: Slit Lamp Examinations, Dilated Eye Exams, Refraction for Glasses and Contact Lenses and Glaucoma Pressure Testing as well as a series of computerized tests to determine the health of your eyes.
A cataract is clouding of the natural lens in your eye. Once cataracts develop, it usually takes years to significantly affect your vision. When this happens, there are surgical options that can help restore your vision and Dr. Thompson can help co-manage your care post-operatively with your ophthalmologist.
Patients with Diabetes are more likely to develop eye problems including retinopathy, cataracts, glaucoma and double vision. It is essential that diabetics monitor and control their blood sugar levels under the care of their primary care physician. Over time, diabetes can affect the blood circulation to your eye and can cause retinopathy. Diabetics can significantly reduce eye complications with annual eye exams to evaluate and monitor your retinal health.
Glaucoma is the second most common cause of blindness in the United States. Macular degeneration (AMD) is the leading cause of vision loss in Americans 60 and older. People with family history of glaucoma and AMD are at greater risk. Having annual eye exams is the best way to determine if you have these diseases.

We offer the latest technology by Canon to provide you with an advanced digital retinal image (DRI). This is a high resolution photograph of your retina which will help us document, review, and compare your retina over time. We will use DRI to screen for eye diseases and improve our ability to view your internal retinal health at a much higher resolution than conventional methods. This technology helps us see in greater detail retinal problems such as macular degeneration, glaucoma, retinal holes, hypertensive and diabetic retinopathy (all of which can lead to loss of vision) at early stages.
On the left is a normal retina, and on the right is a abnormal retina.
