The eye is the part of our anatomy which allows us to see. Our optometrist Las Vegas NV will help to keep your eyes in excellent health. The eye is about one inch in diameter. When you look at the eye, the colored part that you see is the iris. Covering the iris is the cornea; the cornea is a clear dome that completely covers the front of the iris. Inside the circle formed by the iris is the pupil. The pupil is the black opening in the iris that lets the light come in. Another name for the white of your eye is the sclera. The conjunctiva is the thin layer of tissue that covers the front of your eye, except for the cornea. When this part of the eye becomes inflamed or irritated you have conjunctivitis. Behind the iris and pupil is the lens. The lens will focus light onto the back of your eye, where the retina is found. Most of the eye is filled with a gel like substance called the vitreous. The retina is the inside lining of the back of the eye, and is made up of light-sensing cells. Together these cells are referred to as the retina. The cells in the center of the retina form the macula and are responsible for detail and central vision. Behind the eye is the optic nerve. The optic nerve carries the light impulses to the brain. Your eye color is made up by the pigment in your iris. This eye color is determined by different gene combinations that you inherit.
